What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia, put simply, is a reading disorder, but hearing something put simply is never a good way to understand it. It’s like saying ‘football, put simply, is a sport.’ This doesn’t help you understand what football is, how it’s part of people's lives, how people who play football view it, and all of the complexities that are in the sport. Just as ‘football is a sport’ doesn’t fully explain football, ‘dyslexia is a reading disorder’ doesn’t fully explain dyslexia. |
Dyslexia can come on from genetics. At birth there could be micro absurdities in the part of the brain that processes reading and writing. The book David and Goliath states that people with dyslexia have "less gray matter" or not as many brain cells in that region. This means that they can have normal intelligence, but have a hard time processing information through reading. People can also get it through strokes, traumatic brain injury, or dementia. Generally though, it runs through genetics.
